IMI Releases 2023 Annual Medicaid MCO Survey

2023 Marks Six Years of Data Collection On Emerging Issues

Washington, DC – The Institute for Medicaid Innovation (IMI), a 501c3 national nonprofit, nonpartisan research and policy organization, today released its annual Medicaid managed care organization (MCO) survey. This year’s survey is more focused, with 30% fewer questions, and features an online option to make completion easier. This year marks six years of data collection, providing valuable insights into how Medicaid health plans experienced and adapted to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The survey represents a combined effort of multiple volunteers and Medicaid thought leaders from across the field. The eleven sections of the survey reflect questions carefully identified through workgroups and committees to best support the work of policymakers, researchers, and health plan representatives.

The survey’s annual review process allows for IMI to capture new and emerging categories in the Medicaid landscape. Last year’s survey included the launch of the new telehealth section. The 2022 survey telehealth fact sheet highlighted this collected data and showcased the most common barriers and opportunities health plans encountered. Barriers included access to technology and devices, while 71% health plans also shared that telehealth contributed to increased patient access overall.

In addition to telehealth, the 2023 survey contains the following categories: high-risk care coordination, alternative payment methods, pharmacy, sexual and reproductive health, behavioral health, child and adolescent health, long-term services and supports, social determinants of health, COVID-19, and health equity and structural racism.

Each participating health plan will receive an individualized, benchmarked report of deidentified, aggregated responses from health plans of similar size.

Access the survey on our website. Health plans should complete the survey at the parent level.

Completed surveys are due by March 15th.

The IMI team thanks the representatives from the Medicaid health plans serving on the Institute’s Data & Research Committee and Survey Subcommittee who have devoted their time and effort to this important project.
