Midwifery Policy Collective Launches Opportunity for States to Advance Community-Based Midwifery
People with Medicaid insurance often have inadequate access to midwifery-led care. Community-based midwifery care, which is care delivered by midwives of any credential in a home, birth center, or free-standing health clinic setting, can address gaps in perinatal health care access while improving health outcomes for those who stand to benefit the most.
The Institute for Medicaid Innovation is a proud co-convener of the Midwifery Policy Collective, which will select up to 10 state-based teams engaged in advancing policies that support community-based midwifery. Selected teams will receive funding, along with shared learning, technical assistance, resource development, and outcomes evaluation through August 2027.
The partner organizations that are supporting this effort include: American Association of Birth Centers, Birth Center Equity, Birth Place Lab, Elephant Circle, Institute for Medicaid Innovation, National Association for the Advancement of Black Birth, National Association of Certified Professional Midwives, and the Pritzker Children’s Initiative.
