Medicaid is a health insurance program run by both the federal government and each state. It helps mainly low-income people and families get medical care. The federal government pays at least half of state Medicaid costs, and sometimes more for states that expanded Medicaid eligibility. Learn more at What is Medicaid?
Medicaid mainly serves children, pregnant people, parents/ caregivers, seniors (65+), and people with disabilities who meet certain income criteria. In some states, it covers some adults without children.
By law, Medicaid pays for basic services, like doctor visits, hospital care, preventive services, and prescriptions. Many states also cover dental, vision, physical therapy, long term care, and non-emergency medical transportation. Children receive comprehensive benefits.
You can apply for Medicaid at HealthCare.gov or find your state’s specific agency at Medicaid.gov. You can submit your application online, by phone, by mail, or in person.
(The 2025 OBBBA Law)
A new federal budget law called the “One Big Beautiful Bill” act will change how people keep Medicaid. Starting January 1, 2027, some adults in certain states will need to renew coverage every 6 months. Many adults will also have to show they work or do approved activities for about 80 hours a month (about 20 hours a week), or prove they are exempt. If people don’t meet these rules, they risk losing coverage.
