Making the Business Case for SDOH – New Toolkit Available

The Institute for Medicaid Innovation has launched a new strategic resource to advance social determinants of health (SDOH) investments by Medicaid health plans and community-based organizations.

The project – the Value of Investing in Social Determinants of Health Toolkit – serves as a comprehensive resource to articulate the business case for launching, leading, and expanding initiatives focused on addressing inequities and SDOH.

The first phase, funded by the Episcopal Health Foundation, is now available.  It guides Medicaid health plans, state Medicaid agencies, health care, and community-based organizations in their SDOH investments by offering the following:

  1. Tools to prepare and initiate authentic partnerships with community organizations, honoring their knowledge and preferences; and
  2. Relationship management strategies for advancing partnerships with community organizations serving those who have Medicaid health insurance coverage and appropriate methods of meeting their stated needs.

IMI’s Social Determinants of Health Subcommittee, which includes leaders from 12 Medicaid health plans from across the country, is serving as the steering committee for this project.
